Whispered interpreting, also known as "chuchotage" (from the French term for "whispering"), is a form of simultaneous interpreting. Unlike traditional simultaneous interpreting, whispered interpreting does not require specialized equipment.

How Whispered Interpreting Works

In whispered interpreting, the interpreter works in real-time with the speaker but does so without the use of a soundproof booth. Instead, the interpreter sits close to a small group of listeners and provides a live translation in a low, hushed voice. This method is particularly useful when only a few attendees require translation services while the majority understand the language being spoken.

Ideal for Small Groups

While whispered interpreting does not require specialized equipment, it is best suited for small groups – typically up to three people. For slightly larger groups, a portable "small simultaneity" equipment can be used. This equipment includes essential components such as headphones for the interpreter and listeners, a receiver, and a microphone for the speaker. This equipment allows the interpreter to provide effective translation while avoiding the costs associated with full simultaneous interpreting equipment.
